Literary Warnings - 1480 Words

Literary Warnings Throughout history, authors have utilized their works of literary art to entertain and also to inform. Some texts have no merit as a form of instruction, but those usually do not last the test to time. Of the literary works that have survived through the years, the vast majority of them have a lesson to teach the reader which warns them against a certain set of behaviors which may serve as a hindrance to them either in their life or in the afterlife. Characters in works of literature can function either as ideal examples of how a person should behave, or they can function as counterexamples wherein the reader is encouraged absolutely not to emulate their behaviors. Each story provides a unique lesson and an expectation from the author that the reader will understand what it is that they are trying to teach. This is certainly true for the likes of authors such as the Beowulf author, Geoffrey Chaucer, and John Milton in their most famous literary works. Beowulf tells the story of a warrior who goes to serve another country and to fight their monster Grendel. In the epic poem Beowulf, the hero is one born to wealth and raised to wealth. This position, rather than making him weak, has allowed Beowulf to become respected in his community as a man of generosity and, because of his skills as a warrior, immense courage. To this extent, the reader sees Beowulf engaging in acts of bravery and of generosity towards his fellow men. Fun Facts About Thresher Sharks

Are you ready to learn a few thresher shark facts? There are several to share about this popular type of shark. The most notable feature of the thresher shark is the long, whip-like upper lobe of their tail, which is known as the caudal fin. In total, there are three species of thresher sharks: The common thresher (Alopias vulpinus), pelagic thresher (Alopias pelagicus) and the bigeye thresher (Alopias superciliosus). What a Thresher Shark Looks Like Thresher sharks have big eyes, a small mouth, large pectoral fins, first dorsal fin, and pelvic fins. They have a small second dorsal fin (near their tail) and anal fins. Their most noticeable characteristic, as noted above, is that the top lobe of their tail is unusually long and whip-like. This tail may be used to herd and stun small fish, upon which it preys. Depending on the species, thresher sharks may be gray, blue, brown, or purplish. They have light gray to white coloring below their pectoral fins. They can grow to a maximum of about 20 feet in length. These sharks are sometimes seen jumping out of the water and are sometimes confused with other marine mammals. My Story Of Race. I Was Born In A Small Steel Mill Town

My Story of Race I was born in a small steel mill town in Northeast Ohio with a population around 28,000 of which 80-85% were white non-Hispanics. The crime rate was low, and the only area in town where I saw black families was on the East side of town (on the other side of the tracks). On my way to my Grandmother’s house, blacks were often seen coming out of all black churches and hanging out on front porches and street corners. At that time, I do not remember any personal interaction with any black families, but in the evening, us kids were always told to lock the car doors. My parents owned a mobile home community, gas/convenience store, and bottled gas business, and I remember riding with my father to deliver propane to many†¦show more content†¦My question resulted in a big confrontation with my parents about multiracial dating. At which time, I stormed out of the house yelling, â€Å"I’ll bring home a black man if I want to.† After tying the knot in January of my senior year to my Caucasian high school sweetheart, I spent a few months living at my parent’s Florida snowbird retreat in an all-white 55+ community and then I moved to Aberdeen, MD to be with my new husband. Again, I was sheltered from the inner city, living off post in Aberdeen, even though there were quite a few people of color living in the area, I rarely encountered anyone except white friends and neighbors from the base. Only once did we venture on a drive to Baltimore, where all I saw was African Americans. I’ll be quite honest, I was petrified, they were all hanging out on the streets, I just wanted to go home. After AIT, my husband was transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington. There we made friends with many white couples and a couple single Mexican soldiers. One of my husband’s Sergeants who visited us, had a wife from Thailand. She spoke broken English and was very sweet and caring. We went to their house for Thanksgiving Dinner one year. It was the first time his wife had ever cooked the traditional American spread. I remember she put so much pepper in the mashed potatoes, that they were spicy in every bite.
